Your Puppys Journey Home

After years of breeding and raising Corgi puppies, we have found these items to be the most helpful in keeping our puppies comfortable, safe, and well-adjusted as they move into their new homes. While every household is different, this list reflects what has consistently worked best for us and is offered as friendly guidance to help you get started.

______

Dog Crate

An open wire crate is recommended to allow for proper airflow. Corgis tend to run warm, and adequate ventilation helps keep them comfortable and cool.

Crate pad

A cooling mat works best. Plush beds and thick mats often trap heat, which can make your puppy uncomfortable. Many puppies will avoid overly warm bedding in favor of cooler surfaces.

Food & Water Bowls

Corgi puppies typically eat no more than one cup per meal, so smaller bowls are sufficient. Clean, fresh water should always be available to support proper hydration.

Leash and Collar

Puppies outgrow collars quickly, so there is no need to invest in expensive options early on. A standard collar and a shorter leash are recommended. Keeping your puppy close allows for better control, safer walks, and more effective early training. Harnesses are not advised for young puppies, as they can encourage pulling behaviors.

Food

Your puppy will go home with a quart-sized bag of Purina Puppy Chow. If you choose to transition to a different food, do so gradually over the course of 7 days by mixing the new food with the current food. Be sure the food is specifically formulated for puppies. Puppies should remain on puppy food for their first year of life.

Toys

Toys are essential for mental stimulation and healthy development. They help redirect energy toward safe and appropriate play. Choose durable toys and avoid items that can be easily chewed apart and swallowed. There is no need to overspend—simple, safe items such as an empty plastic water bottle (with the cap and label removed) can provide hours of entertainment.

Final Tips

Keep your veterinarian’s phone number readily available, along with the number for an emergency veterinary clinic. Be sure to register your puppy’s microchip with your current contact information in case they are ever lost or stolen.

Please schedule veterinary appointments in advance for your puppy’s second and third sets of booster vaccinations. Puppies are not fully vaccinated during their first year of life, and completing the full vaccine series is essential for proper protection.

At your first veterinary visit, obtain flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. This is essential for dogs living in Florida, where the warm, humid climate creates an ideal environment for parasites and mosquitoes that transmit heartworm disease.

Most importantly, remember that your breeder is always available as a resource. We are happy to answer questions and provide support whenever needed. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
